Abstract. Muryani E, Sajidan, Budiastuti MTS, Pranoto. 2023. Diversity and potential of herbaceous plants as mercury (Hg) hyperaccumulators in small-scale gold mining sites Pancurendang, Banyumas, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 3378-3386. Plants resistant to can be used an alternative processing waste with the phytoremediation method. The study aimed inventory plant species artisanal (ASGM) Pancurendang Village (Banyumas, Central Java, Indonesia), measure concentrations root zones, analyze hyperaccumulators. Herbaceous were cataloged by purposive sampling multiple quadrats 2m x 14 locations then analyzed obtain density, frequency, dominance, importance value, diversity index. Biomass Hg measured from selected soil samples zone. Biological Accumulation Coefficient (BAC) was calculated determine plants' Plant identified 54 belonging 26 families, Paspalum conjugatum P.J.Bergius being dominant species. In found at 11-73 ppm 7.6-85.36 19 Ipomea aquatica Forssk. accumulated highest concentration (85.36 ppm) absorbed greatest amount (5.25 mg). Based on their BACs, nineteen categorized into moderate high (hyper) accumulators, Plectranthus sp. having BAC 4.54.

Treatment of small scale gold mining wastewater using pilot-scale sedimentation and Cocopeat filter bed system

The use of amalgamation process to recover gold from mined ores by the small-scale gold miners in the Philippines and other developing countries produces and dispose of untreated wastewater to the receiving water bodies. In this study, a field-scale filter bed system was constructed to treat heavy metal metal-laden wastewater collected from small-scale gold mining site in Paracale, Camarines No...

Current Mercury Exposure from Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining in Bombana, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia—Future Significant Health Risks

The rapid expansion of the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) industry in developing countries has marginalized the local communities in poverty, and resulted in occupational exposure to mercury via the gold extraction process. We investigated the mercury exposure of the mining workers lived inside and outside the mining area. Based on the occupations of the contributors, the hair sam...

Mercury contamination associated with small-scale gold mining in Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

Mercury contamination associated with small-scale gold mining and processing represents a major environmental and human health concern in Eastern and Southern Africa. Approximately 200,000-300,000 persons are involved in small-scale gold mining activities in Tanzania and > 200,000 persons in Zimbabwe. Mercury (Hg) is used mainly for the processing of primary gold quartz veins and supergene gold...

Mercury Exposure Assessment and Spatial Distribution in A Ghanaian Small-Scale Gold Mining Community

Mercury is utilized worldwide in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) and may pose a risk for miners and mining communities. While a number of studies have characterized mercury in ASGM communities, most have focused on a single media and few have taken a holistic approach. Here, a multiple media exposure assessment and cross-sectional study of mercury was conducted in 2010 through 2012...
